Uruguay World Cup 2022 squad: Who's in and who's out?

Who got the nod from head coach Diego Alonso for Qatar World Cup 2022?

Uruguay qualified for the upcoming 2022 World Cup after finishing third in the CONMEBOL qualifiers behind Brazil and Argentina.

They have a rich history at the tournament, hosting the first World Cup in 1930 and going on to win it after emerging triumphant over Argentina in the final.

They won their second Jules Rimet trophy in 1950 causing a massive upset by beating Brazil at a chalk-a-block Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

On their last participation in 2018, they were beaten by eventual champions France in the quarter-finals and Diego Alonso and his men will be hopeful of improving on that performance this time around.

They have been placed in Group H along with Portugal, Ghana, and South Korea.

Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera should be the first-choice keeper in the 2022 World Cup. He plays for Turkish giants Galatasaray and with over 130 international caps to his name he is the undisputed number one between the sticks.

Sergio Rochet is second in the pecking order. The 29-year-old plies his trade with Nacional and deputised for Muslera in the final stretch of the World Cup qualifiers when his rival was nursing a ligament injury.

Uruguay have an incredible backline led by skipper Diego Godin. The former Atletico Madrid man is partnered at the heart of defence by Jose Maria Gimenez, who currently plays under Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital. They are ably backed up by Sebastian Coates and Martin Caceres.

Barcelona's Ronald Araujo might have to settle for a place at right-back as the two centre-backs slots are seemingly locked in.

Guillermo Varela should give stiff competition to Araujo for that spot.

Napoli's Mathias Olivera and Roma's Mathias Vina are the two prominent choices for the left-back position and Alonso has the luxury to keep rotating between the two depending on form and opposition.

MIDFIELDERS

Alonso sets his team up either with a five-man midfield with two double pivots or a flat four at the centre of the park.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Torreira usually play as the two defensive midfielders.

Federico Valverde has been in stellar form with Real Madrid and it will be no surprise if he were to be used in more advanced areas of the pitch rather than from a deep-lying position. Matthias Vecino and Nicolas De La Cruz might accompany the 24-year-old in midfield.

Manchester United's Facundo Pellistri also makes the cut.

Getty ImagesATTACKERS

Uruguay have produced some fine strikers in recent years and it is no surprise that at the 2022 World Cup they once again have one of the most distinguished attacking departments.

Although Luis Suarez is in the twilight of his career, the 35-year-old still has that flair that is a defender's nightmare.

The new star on the horizon is Darwin Nunez, who is blooming into a fine forward under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool. Edinson Cavani is another option for Alonso who can be handy with his experience in the World Cup.
